200-Amp Electrical Panel Upgrades and Service Entrance Work

A 100-amp service panel was adequate for a 1960s house with a gas range, a window air conditioner, and minimal electronics. It is not adequate for a household running central air conditioning, an electric dryer, a modern kitchen, and an EV charger. When Oakland County homeowners want to add any of those loads and find the panel full, the panel is the bottleneck. We replace undersized panels with 200-amp service as a standalone project or as part of a larger renovation.
The upgrade process involves coordinating a temporary disconnect with DTE Energy, replacing the service entrance cable from the meter to the new panel, installing a 200-amp main breaker panel with properly rated branch breakers, and transferring all existing circuits with correct labeling. During the transfer, we inspect every existing circuit connection and flag double-tapped breakers, undersized conductors, and improperly grounded outlets.
We pull the electrical permit, coordinate the utility disconnect on the scheduled date, and schedule the building department inspection. The full process takes one to two days on site in most cases. We provide a complete circuit directory and a copy of the signed permit documentation. Some homeowners' insurance carriers require documentation of an upgraded panel when replacing a 60-amp fuse box — we've provided that documentation enough times to know which carriers ask for it.
