Surface preparation and protection determine whether a paint project looks professional or amateurish. They also determine whether your furniture and floors are in the same condition they were before we started. We fill nail holes and dents with lightweight spackle. We caulk gaps between trim and walls with paintable acrylic caulk. We sand glossy surfaces for adhesion, remove or mask hardware and fixtures, and clean surfaces before primer goes on. The actual painting is the last thing that happens.
Furniture and floor protection follows a consistent protocol on every job. Furniture gets moved to room centers and covered with plastic sheeting. Canvas drop cloths go over all flooring. Painter's tape gets applied to trim edges and window glass. HVAC registers, outlets, and switch plates get masked or removed. In occupied homes, plastic dust barriers go up to contain sanding dust and overspray within the work area.
Oakland County homeowners who've had paint contractors skip the prep know what it costs to correct afterward. Tape applied sloppily over trim. Paint overspray on hardwood floors. Hardware with dried paint in the screw slots. We arrive with the full complement of protection materials and set up systematically before any work begins. When the job is complete, we remove all tape and coverings, reinstall hardware, and clean the space so it's ready to use immediately.
