Tile Layout Design and Grout Color Consultation

A tile layout planned on the fly during installation produces results that look improvised: awkward sliver cuts at the edge of a visible wall, a pattern that starts off-center on the focal surface, or grout joints that aren't aligned with cabinetry or window openings. We plan every tile layout before installation starts — specifying starting points, cut locations, pattern direction, accent placement, and transition details in a scaled drawing you approve first.

Grout color changes the appearance of a tile installation more than most homeowners expect. A light grout on a dark tile emphasizes the grid pattern and makes the individual tiles read more prominently. A matching grout lets the tile surface read as a continuous plane. We provide grout sample boards showing your selected tile with multiple color options so you can see the actual effect — not guess at it from a small chip sample in different lighting.

For Southeast Michigan kitchens and bathrooms, we also consult on grout type. Standard sanded or unsanded grout works well in most applications and is straightforward to maintain with proper sealing. Epoxy grout is worth the additional cost in high-moisture areas and around kitchen backsplashes where grease and food contact is frequent — it's non-porous, highly stain resistant, and never needs sealing. We make that recommendation based on your specific installation, not as a default upcharge.
