Custom Decks & Outdoor Living
Multi-Tier Wood & Composite Decks
JD Contracting LLC builds multi-level deck systems using Trex, TimberTech composite, and premium pressure-treated wood for Metro Detroit homeowners. Our custom designs include built-in benches, integrated lighting, and engineered foundations for Michigan's climate.
Multi-Tier Wood & Composite Decks
What's Included in Our Multi-Tier Wood & Composite Decks Service
Multi-tier decks work well on sloped lots where a single-level deck would require extremely tall posts or significant fill. On a flat lot, multiple levels define separate use zones — a dining area at door level, a lower lounge near grade, stairs connecting them with transitions that make the space feel intentional rather than awkward. We design both types throughout Metro Detroit, and the engineering approach is different for each.
Foundations go below Michigan's 42-inch frost line on every deck we build. Post sizes, beam spans, and joist layouts are calculated for actual loads — live load, dead load, and snow load for Oakland County's climate. Ledger connections get self-adhering membrane flashing and through-bolted fasteners with proper standoffs so water can't sit between the ledger and the house framing. These aren't optional details; they're what separates a deck that performs for 30 years from one that starts pulling away from the house in year five.
Built-in features — bench seating with storage, integrated LED lighting in stair risers and post caps, cable or glass railing systems — are planned in the design phase, not added as afterthoughts. We use 3D renderings so Oakland County homeowners can see material colors, railing profiles, and level transitions before construction begins. All permits are pulled and every structural connection is inspected before the project closes.

Yes. All Oakland County deck projects require a building permit, and we handle the full process including plan submission, inspections, and setback compliance.
A multi-tier deck has two or more levels connected by stairs, ideal for sloped yards common in Oakland County. Multiple tiers create distinct zones for dining and lounging.
Multi-tier deck construction typically takes 2 to 4 weeks. Complex designs with built-in lighting, pergolas, or cable railing may add an additional week. Actual timelines may vary based on project complexity, permit timelines, material availability, and site conditions.
Composite decking (Trex, TimberTech) performs best in Michigan's freeze-thaw cycles, resisting warping, rot, and fading. Cedar is a popular natural option but requires annual maintenance.
